International students in the US are eligible for health insurance coverage. However, there are a few things you need to know before applying. I’ve compiled a list of resources that can help answer any questions you might have about your eligibility for benefits, how to find the nearest clinic, and where to find information on what documents you need. Healthcare in America is expensive and complicated. In this blog post, I’ll go over everything you need to know about how international students get health insurance in the US so that you can apply for benefits with confidence!
What is the definition of an international student?
The term international student has several definitions. The one that applies to most students is that you are an overseas national enrolled in a program of higher education in the US. This means that you are not a US citizen and you do not live in the US permanently. Do I need to be a permanent resident in the US? You will be considered a resident of the US for the purposes of determining your eligibility for benefits. This means that your entire family will be considered residents of the US. However, international students cannot apply for family health coverage through their employer. If you are a student with a spouse or children who are US citizens, you will be eligible for children’s health insurance coverage through your employer. Do I need to have health insurance coverage?
How can international students get health insurance coverage in the US?
International students can get health insurance through the COBRA program. COBRA stands for “Continuation of Broader Insurance Coverage.” It was introduced by the ACA in 2010. (Congress passed the ACA in 2010, but it was not enacted until the following year, on March 23, 2010. The ACA was signed into law on March 23, 2010.) There are still some questions about how to access COBRA. Since the ACA does not cover dependent children of US citizens, a person who wants to continue their dependent’s coverage must be covered by employer-sponsored insurance. If you were uninsured or under-insured when you first came to the US, and you maintain continuous insurance coverage, you qualify for COBRA coverage. COBRA works similar to short-term insurance; it can be canceled at any time.
What are the requirements for applying for benefits?
Health insurance eligibility is based on your financial eligibility. Your financial eligibility is determined based on your family’s income, assets, and whether you have a dependent child in the US. To apply for health insurance coverage, you’ll need the following: Your name Birth date (no date, no benefits) Address and phone number of your residence in the US Acceptance of the International Student Exception in the Affordable Care Act (ACA, aka Obamacare) State in which you’re currently residing Insurance coverage requirements and proof of enrollment Student plan enrollment is not required; however, you must submit proof of insurance for benefits to be eligible for coverage. And, depending on your circumstances, you may need documentation of your application.

The more resources you can gather beforehand, the more successful you’ll be at applying! One of the best things you can do before applying is to gather as much information as possible from your medical school’s health insurance office about the process they use to approve international students’ applications. The earliest you can apply for US citizenship and to participate in educational programs for permanent residency is after your first year. (The process can take several years, depending on how long it takes to obtain an interview.) Before you can apply for health insurance benefits, you must establish that you are a permanent resident and are able to work in the US. This can happen in different ways, so here are some of the ways to establish eligibility: Pay your taxes in the US.
